A message from Jeryl Scurr

– The Weight Debate CEO

My name is Jeryl Scurr, and since 2014 I have been speaking on this issue – providing groups, health professionals and schools with what I believe is a fresh, balanced and thought-provoking discussion on obesity, weight stigma and body acceptance.

Whilst teaching History and Women’s Studies at a girl’s school I witnessed at first hand the effect poor body image had on my students. This led to years of personal research into all aspects of our ‘culture of thin’, but instead of persuing a planned higher degree I decided I must do something.

As I love teaching and speaking I was inspired to set up the Weight Debate.

Through my talks (and a good dose of humour) I help people understand and to effectively deal with the obesity epidemic, and its fallout of weight stigma, disordered eating and poor body image.

“It’s a pleasure working with someone who is as passionate and strong-minded as yourself, who works towards supporting and helping all ages understand and learn to have confidence and love themselves again. It's people like you who make every day better than the day before. So all in all, thank you Jeryl for coming to our library.”

“Dress for Success Greater London is a charity who empowers women to succeed in life and work. We have used Jeryl from The Weight Debate on several occasions at our Professional Women’s Group meetings and our Allen and Overy Career Development days and found that Jeryl’s sessions on Body Image and confidence were informative, participative and FUN. They aligned perfectly with Dress for Success’s mission in confidence building. Dress for Success clients thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and we will certainly be using Jeryl again.”

“Jeryl gave a very insightful talk to 20 members of the St Albans Jewish Women’s Forum. The discussion ranged across the spectrum of anorexia, bulimia and dieting and also focused on the Jewish attitude to food, where all aspects of the keeping up the religion seem to gravitate towards what we can and shouldn’t eat. The Q&A session at the end could have gone on for hours!”

St Albans Jewish Women’s Forum
